Barotrauma: The Sci-Fi Submarine Simulator Game Launches in Full on Steam
Barotrauma, the sci-fi submarine simulator game, finally sets sail for a full launch after nearly four years in Early Access. The game is now available on Steam! Daedalic Entertainment, FakeFish, and Undertow Games have released a new video to celebrate the occasion and offer players a glimpse into the depths of Europa.
Set on Jupiter's frozen moon, Europa, Barotrauma combines survival horror and RPG elements in a 2D co-op submarine simulator. The game features single-player and multiplayer modes, supporting up to 16 players who must navigate the treacherous depths while fulfilling various missions.
Since its Early Access launch in the summer of 2019, developers FakeFish and Undertow Games have significantly improved the game, including a complete overhaul of the campaign and tutorials, new monsters, missions, outposts, graphical upgrades, a scripted event system, and more. These enhancements were possible due to the feedback and support from over 30,000 Discord members and 60,000 player-made entries on the Steam Workshop. The developers even incorporated a player-made submarine into the base game as part of a community competition.
Barotrauma offers procedurally generated levels, ragdoll physics, and full mod support, leading to thrilling and often hilarious chaos. The multiplayer mode also includes a "traitor" option, where players may be assigned secret conspiratorial missions, such as assassination or sabotage, adding a layer of intrigue and deception to the gameplay.
Players take on various roles, including Captain, Engineer, Mechanic, Medic, Security Officer, and Assistant, each with different skills and tasks. The talent system allows players to gain experience, unlock talents, and customize their playstyle through three specialization talent trees for each class. The game also features faction and reputation mechanics, allowing players to choose their alliances, help various causes, and experience the consequences of their decisions.
Barotrauma's procedurally generated world and missions and its multiple game modes ensure virtually endless replayability. A comprehensive crafting system lets players gather materials, craft equipment, weapons, medicines, and more to help their crew survive on Europa. Built-in editors enable players to create their own submarines and monsters, and mods can be shared and discovered directly via the Steam Workshop. Most game data is exposed in .xml format, and the game's source code is publicly available on GitHub for modding.
Developed by FakeFish and Undertow Games, Barotrauma began as an open-development project by Undertow Games, the developer of the free, open-source horror game SCP – Containment Breach. In early 2018, award-winning indie studio FakeFish Ltd. joined the project with its team of industry veterans and fresh talents to launch Barotrauma on Steam. The joint studio, based in Turku, Finland, now develops survival horror PC titles that support extensive user-generated content and come with built-in editors.
